P’NEI MENACHEM: PARAH

The 16th of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Pinchas Menachem (ben Avraham Mordechai) Alter, the Pnei Menachem of Ger (1926-1996). The fifth son of the Imrei Emes, Rav Pinchas   was born in the resort town of Palinitz, Poland when his father was 60 years old. Along with his father and other family members, he escaped to Erezt Yisrael during World War II. In 1946, he married his cousin, and two years later, his father passed away. Three of the Imrei Emes’ sons became Rebbe of Ger: Rav Yisrael (the Beis Yisrael, nifter 1977), Rav Simcha Bunim (the Lev Simcha, nifter 1992), and Rav Pinchas Menachem (the Pnei Menachem). However, Rav Pinchas Menachem was Rosh Yeshiva of Sefas Emes of Ger in Yerushalayim from the time he was 30, and was head of Agudas Yisrael after the petria of Rav Yitzchak Meir Levine. The Talmud teaches that God gives wisdom to those who are wise because the gift of wisdom would be misused if granted to one without an appreciation of wisdom. Wisdom must “land” in the righ...

PARAH-DINOV-ATTACHING TO MOSHE

The 19th of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Dovid (ben Tzvi Elimelech) of Dinov (1804-1874). Rav Dovid was the author of Tzemach Dovid and Divrei Dovid, and the son of the Bnei Yissoschar. He succeeded his father as Rebbe   in Dinov following the latter’s petira in 1841.   “This is the decree of the Torah, which God has commanded, saying, ‘ Speak to the Children of Israel, and they shall take to you a completely red cow’ (Numbers 19:2).” Since the secrets of the Red Cow are revealed only to you, therefore, “they shall take to you,” meaning, they should attach to you and trust in what you know and understand. (Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech of Dinov; Iggra d’Kallah) Machberes Avodas Hashem : I’ve used this approach, of attaching myself to the wisdom of the teacher, when studying with my father zt”l, and, ybcl”c, my Rebbi shlit”a; I understand that they have access to wisdom far beyond mine, and attach to that wisdom so that I may tast of that higher wisdom. I also use this approach on ...

BIBLICAL PERSONALITIES-MOSHE-RECTIFYING WITH KNOWLEDGE

The entire universe is a complete structure, corresponding to the human form,   Partzuf . This is the mystery of the parallel between “universe, year and soul.” Every detail that exists in the individual person also exists in the human   race as a whole.   Man consists of body and soul. The same is true of each city, and nation. The leader is the soul, and the people are the body. It is written, “This is the generation, its preachers (Psalms 24:6).” Our sages interpret this to teach that, “the generation follows its preachers, and the preachers are according to the generation (Arachin 17a).” If the soul is pure and lucid, the body is the same. If the soul is turbid, the body is not pure. The same is true in the converse situation where the body influences the soul. Moses embodied the mystery of Knowledge for his generation. They were therefore also the, “Generation of Knowledge (Bamidbar Rabbah 19:3).” The same is true of every generation. When a person wants to rectify t...

AMIDAH-MISHPATIM-DA’AT

“And these are the ordinances that you shall place before the (Exodus 21:1).” Some of the Torah’s commandments are duties that a person’s body has to perform. In order to perform these commandments one needs   to know what is involved.   Unless a person performs such duties with his body he would not be considered part of the Holy Covenant between God and His people .   For example, if the person did not know that is forbidden to eat an animal which died from injuries he would consume both it and the blood and the fat parts which are forbidden. Similarly, when performing the positive commandment of the Passover he has to eat the lamb, the bitter herbs, the unleavened bread, keep the days holy. In order to fulfill these commandments he has to be familiar with them. There are other categories of Commandments of the more abstract nature, such as sanctifying the new moon, litigations, laws pertaining to which animal sacrifices are applicable and under what conditions, ...

We pray for knowledge and understanding

The Chatam Sofer said," We read in Pirkei Avot (3:21),' Where there is no knowledge there is no understanding.' Knowledge is acquired from a teacher, understanding from a person's own mind. Understanding, however, must be based upon knowledge to be correct. Very seldom are original ideas correct unless the thinker has learned the rules of logic and the laws of derivation formulated by experienced sages." (Chut ha-Meshulash) In the fourth blessing of the Amidah, when we pray for knowledge and understanding, we should insert a prayer for the part of Redemption that will restore our teachers of knowledge so that we will be able to fully use our understanding. COVID Lesson – Begins at Home

The biggest COVID lesson that I learned was in my home. I began to realize that 99% of my family issues and challenges were all either directly or indirectly related to me. My attitude, my mood, my words, my reactions, etc., all impacted my family. Because of the extra time at home, COVID showed me loud and clear that when I'm aggravated, stressed, or impatient, that my behavior and feelings directly affects everyone in the home.   The woman of the home has a lot of power over the mood in the home. The woman of the house has a huge responsibility. This COVID lesson began at home and remains long after COVID has passed.   -- Blog Sheryl Lopin
